California Issues Safety Guidelines to Limit Cell Phone Radiation Exposure

California Issues Safety Guidelines to Limit Cell Phone Radiation Exposure

Since 2011, the World Health Organization has classified radiation from cellphones as a “carcinogen” that could be linked to causing cancer.[i]  Last year, the U.S. National Toxicology Program also released partial results from an animal study finding that radiofrequency radiation was linked to a higher risk of two cancers in male rats.[ii] While not conclusive, it is concerning considering how many adolescent use cell phones when their brains are still developing. [iii]

California is the first state to issue safety guidelines, in part, because of Professor Joel Moskowitz’s efforts at the University of California at Berkeley.[iv] Professor Moskowitz sued the State back in 2009 because the Department of Public Health refused to release information about the dangers of cell phone radiation. [v]

The California Guidelines advise how you can limit your exposure:

  • Reduce cell phone use when the signal is weak.
  • Reduce use of cellphones to stream audio or video, or download large files.
  • Keep an arm’s length away from your phone at night, especially your head.
  • Use speakerphone or headphones when talking.

Be sure to follow these guidelines if you use your cell phone frequently.
